1 Ferding - Wolter von Plettenberg and Jasper Linde Riga, smooth shield, child to the left

Wolter von Plettenberg, Landmeister of the Livonian Order, and Archbishop Jasper Linde jointly authorized this issue during a period when the two powers maintained an uneasy cooperative authority over Riga — a city that had spent most of the previous century in open conflict with one or both of them. The joint coinage was a practical political instrument, not a gesture of goodwill. Riga had only recently submitted to a negotiated settlement, and shared minting rights formalized a balance of power neither party fully trusted.
