Wolter von Plettenberg, Master of the Livonian Order, and Archbishop Jasper Linde issued this ferding as a joint coinage — an arrangement that reflected the perpetually uneasy power-sharing between the Order and the Archbishopric that had defined Livonian politics for two centuries. The curved-shield variant distinguishes it from the flat-shield emissions of the same pairing and is tied to a specific, brief window of production. Plettenberg was at the height of his influence in 1515, just years after his celebrated victory over Muscovite forces at the Battle of Smolina in 1502, which had bought Livonia a generation of relative stability.
