The "modified effigy" designation marks a deliberate intervention by the Royal Mint in 1926, when Bertram Mackennal's original portrait of George V — used since 1911 — was reworked to reduce the relief and improve striking consistency across the bronze series. The change was practical, not ceremonial, driven by die wear complaints from the Mint's own production staff.
George V died in January 1936, making that year's farthings among the last struck under his name before Edward VIII's brief and uncoronated reign.
