The second issue farthing of George IV replaced the first after Matthew Boulton's Soho Mint lost its contract, returning production to the Royal Mint under a modernized steam-press setup. The 1826 recoinage was part of a broader rationalisation of British copper coinage following years of complaints about substandard regal and counterfeit pieces flooding trade. William Wellesley Pole, as Master of the Mint, had pushed hard for consistent mechanical production standards — this series was among the first to consistently meet them.
Dies for the 1826 date show minor positional variants that collectors have catalogued but which remain outside mainstream specialist focus.
