George II's farthing coinage of the 1730s was produced at a time when the Royal Mint faced persistent criticism over the quality and availability of small copper denominations. Counterfeiting of farthings was rampant throughout this period — small enough in value that prosecutions were infrequent, yet common enough in daily commerce that forgeries circulated freely alongside genuine pieces.
The "young bust" designation distinguishes this from the modified portrait introduced later in the reign. Spink 3720 encompasses the full run of dates across the decade, with 1734 and 1739 generally considered the scarcest within the series.
