Class 3c sits within the broader farthing coinage reorganized under Edward I's major recoinage of 1279, which attempted to rationalize the chaotic mixture of clipped, worn, and foreign silver then passing in English trade. Farthings were habitually cut from pennies before this reform — the 3c classification reflects die-axis and lettering distinctions identified by later scholars, not anything the original moneyers would have distinguished.
At 0.38g, these were among the smallest silver coins struck in medieval England, and losses to the historical record are enormous. Many were simply lost in soil and never recovered.
