Beschrijving keerzijde Degenerate Nagari inscription reading 'Rama Raya', heavily stylized and reduced through repeated die copying to a near-abstract arrangement of strokes and curves. The legend, derived from earlier South Indian temple coinage traditions, is rendered in a crude, compressed form characteristic of late Dutch India fanam issues from Nagapatnam. Individual aksharas are discernible but significantly degraded, set within the plain round field with no border or additional ornament.

Aanvullende informatie

The Nagapattinam fanams issued by the VOC in their final decade of control over the port represent one of the more unusual corners of Dutch colonial coinage — a tiny gold denomination produced not for European accounting systems but to function within existing South Indian exchange networks where the fanam had circulated for centuries. The VOC was by this point a company in terminal financial decline, formally dissolved in 1799, and these late issues from Nagapattinam were struck under an administration already losing grip on its Asian operations.

At 0.34 g, the fanam required exceptional die work at minimal scale — a persistent technical challenge at Nagapattinam throughout the VOC period.
