| Obverse description | Central field features a stylized temple or gate motif rendered in a highly schematic manner, consisting of a vertical pillar flanked by two volute-like scrolls, surmounted by a horizontal bar with a trefoil or triple-finial element above. The design is deeply struck in low relief against a plain, slightly irregular flan typical of hammered coinage. The overall composition is abstract and geometric, reflecting indigenous South Indian artistic conventions adapted under VOC administration. No legend or inscription is present; the device fills the field entirely. The flan edges are uneven, consistent with hand-cut hammered production at the Cochin Mint. |
