| Reverse description | Central field features the Travancore conch shell (sankha) emblem depicted as a boat-shaped vessel filled with a grid of raised pellets, flanked above by a curved scroll device. Below the conch, a trident-like symbol with flanking pellet ornaments occupies the mid-field. Tamil legends in bold raised characters are arranged around and within the field, giving the regnal date and denomination. The border is composed of a continuous row of small raised pellets and foliate elements encircling the design. |

| Additional information |
Ayillyam Thirunal's reign began in 1860 under the administrative grip of the British Resident system, which by that point had reduced Travancore's fiscal autonomy to little more than supervised bookkeeping. The fanam — a denomination with roots stretching back centuries across South Indian trade — was already an anachronism by the time these were struck, increasingly displaced by the British Indian rupee in everyday commerce. Travancore would formally adopt rupee-based coinage as its primary currency within a generation.
