| 正面描述 | Stylized figure of the goddess Kali in low relief, depicted in a dynamic posture within the field of this small hammered gold fanam. A Tanjore rosette motif appears on the breast of the deity. An annulet is positioned in the upper left field, accompanied by two dots in the upper right field. The design is rendered in the characteristic crude but iconographically deliberate style of South Indian gold fanams of the period. |

The Nawabs of Arcot issued fanams in gold throughout the eighteenth century as the Carnatic became an increasingly contested prize between French and British interests. By 1764, the nawabdom was effectively a client state under the East India Company following the decisive campaigns of the 1750s — Muhammad Ali Khan Wallajah nominally ruled but British creditors and military escorts made the political reality plain. These tiny gold fanams continued circulating because local bazaar trade demanded small-denomination gold, regardless of who held real power.
