The devices are surrounded by a circular border, the flan being irregular in form as is typical of hand-struck copper issues from Qandahar. Qandahar's municipal coinage occupies an unusual position in Afghan numismatic history — the city functioned briefly as a quasi-autonomous issuing authority during the turbulent transition following the Second Anglo-Afghan War, which began that same year. British forces would occupy the city by 1879, rendering this local copper issue obsolete within months of production.
