Jabir ibn al-Ash'ath served as governor of Sind under the Abbasid caliph al-Ma'mun during a period when the caliphate was still consolidating authority over its eastern frontier following the devastating civil war between al-Ma'mun and his brother al-Amin. Provincial copper coinage from Sind in this period is poorly documented in the major corpora — Album's listing acknowledges the type with minimal die data, reflecting how few specimens have been catalogued.
