Sijistan — the region centered on modern Zaranj in Afghanistan — was among the more turbulent provincial mints under Umayyad administration, frequently changing hands between loyalist governors and rebel factions during the third decade of the 8th century. Abd Allah b. Umar held authority there during the final years of Marwanid rule, just as the Abbasid revolution was building momentum to the east. The countermark on this piece almost certainly reflects a revalidation episode: existing copper stock restruck to assert or transfer local monetary authority without the cost of a full reminting.
