Additional information

The term "Probe" (from the German/Italian numismatic usage for "essai" or trial strike) places this piece among the Vatican's internal production tests conducted ahead of John Paul II's death in April 2005 and the subsequent sede vacante period. The Vatican mint produced extremely limited trial pieces during this transition — official circulation issues for 2005 ultimately appeared under both the sede vacante issue and Benedict XVI's first coinage. Probe pieces from this interval rarely entered any formal distribution channel.
