SEMPER VALENTIOR SURGO
Reverse description The central field bears a stylised effigy of Pope Clement VI rendered in the manner of a medieval Gros Tournois struck at the Pont-de-Sorgues papal mint, evoking the numismatic heritage of the Avignon papacy. The face value and issuing locality are inscribed in the legend surrounding the central device. The validity dates appear in the upper field and the mint year reference is incorporated into the design.

Additional information

Sorgues issued this piece during the wave of French municipal "euros" that proliferated in 1997–98, ahead of the single currency's 1999 launch. These local authority tokens had no legal tender status — they functioned as promotional instruments, typically exchangeable at participating merchants for a fixed period before being withdrawn and destroyed, which is why surviving examples in unimpaired condition are modestly scarce despite high initial print runs.
