Sweden never adopted the euro. Despite joining the EU in 1995, the country has legally avoided membership in the eurozone by declining to join the European Exchange Rate Mechanism II — a political choice, not a legal exemption. This piece dates from the early 2000s when Swedish euro adoption still seemed plausible, and the Riksbank commissioned pattern strikes to prepare for a currency transition that the 2003 referendum decisively rejected, 56% to 42%.
