Obverse description Central device depicts a stylized reproduction of a Carolingian denier of Laon, rendered in low relief within a raised circular border, showing the characteristic cross and retrograde or archaic letter forms of the medieval prototype. The surrounding field bears a curved legend along the upper periphery reading '9 MAI-24 MAI 1998 - Euromédiévales les 9 & 10 Mai 1998', while the lower portion of the field carries the inscription 'Denier Carolingien de Laon' in a cursive script. The overall design evokes the Carolingian monetary tradition of Laon, issued on the occasion of the Euromédiévales festival held in May 1998.
