Reverse description The reverse bears inscriptions commemorating the inauguration of the Pont de Normandie near Le Havre, produced by the Monnaie de Paris (Pessac) and financed by l'Amicale Numismatique du Havre (Maxime LOUVEL and Isabelle ARMAND). The denomination 1 EURO appears prominently in the field, accompanied by the legend DE LA VILLE DU HAVRE and the dates 25 JUIN - 9 JUILLET 1996 referencing the inaugural period. The design follows the standard Monnaie de Paris type MdeP 1 reverse layout for local euro issues.

Additional information

Piéforts are struck at double the normal planchet thickness as prooflike presentation pieces, but this example is an outlier — struck in aluminium bronze rather than the bimetallic construction of the circulating euro prototype it references, because the euro had not yet been formally adopted for circulation. France was still two years from locking in conversion rates under the Maastricht framework when this piece was produced.
