| Beschrijving keerzijde | The common European reverse, designed by Luc Luycx, features a stylised relief map of the European continent extending beyond the coin's inner disc into the surrounding ring, depicted without internal national borders to symbolise unity. The face value 1 EURO is inscribed to the left of the map in two lines, with the designer's initials LL visible in the lower field. The twelve stars of the European Union appear on the outer ring, echoing the obverse design. |

Felipe VI's accession in June 2014 — following Juan Carlos I's abdication, the first voluntary abdication by a Spanish monarch in modern history — made a new coinage series inevitable. Spain's euro coins had carried Juan Carlos's effigy since the currency's introduction in 1999, and the transition required updating all eight denominations. The 1 euro was among the first issued under the new king's portrait in 2015.
Spanish euro circulation coins are struck at the Madrid mint, one of Europe's oldest continuously operating facilities, founded in 1615.
