Hungary joined the European Union on May 1, 2004, triggering a requirement to produce pattern coinage in euro denominations ahead of eventual eurozone entry. These were never released for circulation — Hungary has repeatedly delayed its euro adoption target, and as of the mid-2020s still uses the forint.
