Additional information

Spain's euro cent coinage shifted to a new reverse design in 2010 following a eurozone-wide standardization directive that harmonized the common reverse across all member states — the original reverse, introduced at euro launch in 1999, was replaced after a decade of parallel national designs. The Madrid mint, one of Europe's oldest continuous minting operations, produces these in substantial annual volumes with relatively little year-to-year variation in output quality.

Copper-plated steel replaced the original copper-plated steel specification without alteration — continuity of material across the changeover was deliberate, avoiding any redenomination confusion at the retail level.
