Latvia joined the Eurozone on January 1, 2014, making this the first year of issue for Latvian euro coinage. The transition ended the lats, a currency that had itself been reintroduced only in 1993 after Latvia reasserted independence — meaning the country had managed just two decades with its own post-Soviet monetary identity before adopting the common currency.
