| Obverse description | The obverse features the first royal seal of Afonso Henriques, dating to 1134 and attributed to Portugal's founding monarch, rendered in the central field. Surrounding the seal, the seven castles and five escutcheons derived from the Portuguese national arms appear in alternating arrangement. The individual letters of the legend PORTUGAL are interspersed between these heraldic elements, and the entire design is encircled by a ring of twelve five-pointed stars representing the European Union. The mint mark INCM and the year of issue appear within the design. |
