| Obverse description | Central depiction of the Castel del Monte, the octagonal 13th-century Hohenstaufen fortress located in Apulia, southeastern Italy, rendered in fine relief against the field. Beneath the castle, the engraver's initials 'ED' and the monogram 'RI' (Repubblica Italiana) appear, along with the mint mark 'R' for Rome. The date of issue is inscribed below the central device. Twelve five-pointed stars, symbolic of the European Union, encircle the design along the outer rim. |
