Greece joined the eurozone on January 1, 2001 — a full year before coins entered circulation — after famously meeting the Maastricht convergence criteria on a second attempt, having been rejected in 1998. The 2002-dated issues were actually struck in 2001, primarily at the Athens mint, with a portion produced under contract at foreign facilities. Those struck outside Greece carry a small mintmark distinguishing them from domestic production, a detail overlooked by casual collectors but documented in Schön.
