Obverse description The obverse features a left-facing effigy of King Albert II, engraved by Jan Alfons Keustermans, rendered in restrained portrait style. The king's royal monogram — a capital letter 'A' surmounted by a crown with the Roman numeral 'II' beneath — appears within the design field. Encircling the portrait are the twelve stars of the European Union, evenly spaced along the periphery. The year of issue and the monogram 'A II' are inscribed within the star ring.
