Obverse description Central depiction of the Gothic façade of the Collégiale Saint-Vulfran in Abbeville, rendered in fine relief detail showing the characteristic Flamboyant Gothic architecture with its elaborate portals, pinnacles, and unfinished towers. The building occupies the majority of the field, presented in a slightly angled perspective. Surrounding the central motif is a ring of twelve five-pointed stars, evocative of the European Union emblem. The curved legend COLLEGIALE SAINT-VULFRAN arcs along the lower rim in raised Latin characters.

Reverse description The field features a stylised cartographic outline of the Picardy coastal region with several birds in flight — likely ducks or wading birds characteristic of the Somme Bay — overlaid across the composition in a decorative naturalistic style. The denomination 1 euro is prominently rendered in large mixed-case lettering at centre, with the numeral 1 above and the word euro below, the latter incorporating a bird motif into its design. The curved legend D'ABBEVILLE COTE PICARDE arcs along the upper rim, and the event dates 14-30 JUIN 1998 are inscribed along the lower rim, separated by a small bird device.

Additional information

Abbeville's 1998 euro is one of thousands of local currency tokens struck across France in anticipation of the single currency, issued by municipalities, chambers of commerce, and regional bodies who saw an opportunity to promote tourism and civic identity during the transition period. The Banque de France tolerated these issues provided they did not replicate official coinage too closely. Most saw negligible circulation and ended up in souvenir packets.
