Sweden has never adopted the Euro. This piece is a pattern or probe strike — part of a series commissioned in the early 2000s when Swedish EU membership made accession a live political question. The September 2003 referendum rejected Euro adoption by 55.9% to 42.0%, and these pieces never progressed to circulation issue. The vote came just days after the assassination of Foreign Minister Anna Lindh, a prominent pro-Euro voice, lending that particular year an unusually charged historical weight.
