Reverse description The reverse displays the second common European reverse design, introduced in 2007, depicting a geographic representation of the European continent extending into adjacent regions, rendered without internal national borders to symbolise unity. The face value 1 EURO is inscribed prominently to the left of the map, with the designer's initials LL — for Luc Luycx — appearing in small characters within the design. The twelve stars of the European Union are arranged around the outer ring, interspersed with the fine reeded security edge pattern of the bimetallic coin. The design was created by Luc Luycx of the Royal Belgian Mint following a competition to update the original euro reverse.
