Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse features a cross-shaped anthropomorphic idol from the Chalcolithic period (circa 3000 B.C.), discovered at Pomos in the district of Paphos, Cyprus. The idol is depicted in stylised form at the centre of the field, characteristic of prehistoric Cypriot art and among the earliest known examples of sculptural expression from the island. The bilingual country name legend ΚΥΠΡΟΣ KIBRIS, in Greek and Turkish respectively, appears along the upper periphery, with the year of issue below.

Aanvullende informatie

Cyprus adopted the euro on 1 January 2008, having been admitted to the Eurozone despite its unresolved territorial division — the northern third of the island remains under Turkish military occupation following the 1974 invasion, and the currency technically circulates only in the southern Republic. That political anomaly made Cyprus one of the few euro adopters where the issuing authority governs a geographically partitioned state, a situation the European Central Bank acknowledged but did not treat as a barrier to accession.
