| Additional information |
Madeira has no independent monetary authority — this is a regional issue struck under Portuguese auspices, not a sovereign emission. The European Central Bank permits eurozone member states to produce collector-oriented regional variants, and Portugal has used that allowance to issue pieces attributed to Madeira, the Azores, and other autonomous territories. These circulated at face value throughout the eurozone but were effectively collector targets from the moment of release.
