Portuguese pattern coinage of this period was produced largely to test compositions and designs ahead of circulating issue decisions — the mid-1960s saw Lisbon actively reconsidering its alloy choices as nickel silver costs fluctuated. The Gomes R E7.13 designation places this firmly within the escudo pattern sequence documented by Rui Gomes, a reference that remains the authoritative catalog for Portuguese trial and pattern pieces of the 20th century.
Whether this specific composition was ever seriously considered for circulation is unclear; the nickel brass formula here differs from the cupronickel eventually retained for the circulating 1 escudo.
