Felipe V abdicated in favor of his son Luis I in January 1724, then reclaimed the throne seven months later when Luis died of smallpox — making him the only Spanish monarch to reign twice. The gold coinage struck under his second reign, including this escudo, was produced under persistent financial strain as Spain rebuilt its mint infrastructure following the disruptions of the War of the Spanish Succession. Madrid's output during this window was modest compared to the colonial mints, and domestic gold escudos of this type are considerably scarcer than their Mexican or Peruvian counterparts.
