Obverse description Central device depicts the Chilean coat of arms: a shield supported by a condor to the left and a huemul deer to the right, with a plume of three feathers above and a laurel branch below. The legend REPUBLICA DE CHILE encircles the design along the upper periphery, with the date 1838 appearing in the lower field flanked by small stars. The engraving is crude and uneven throughout the field, consistent with contemporary counterfeit manufacture. The rim shows an irregular milled border.
