Carlos III's gold coinage from New Spain was produced under the "bust" reform that swept Spanish colonial mints beginning in the late 1750s, replacing the cob-style macuquina with mechanically struck, uniformly round pieces. The Mexico City mint was among the first in the Americas to fully adopt the new machinery, but early production in the smaller escudo denominations was plagued by inconsistent planchet preparation — a known problem that collectors encounter regularly in this type, particularly in the first years of the series.
The 1762 opening date corresponds almost exactly to Spain's disastrous entry into the Seven Years' War on the French side, ending with the loss of Florida to Britain in 1763.
