Carlos II, the last Habsburg king of Spain, ruled under regencies for much of his life and never exercised meaningful personal authority over his mints. Majorca operated with considerable autonomy, and its gold coinage of the 1690s reflects the fiscal desperation of a Crown stretched thin by the Nine Years' War. The island's mint output in this decade was small and irregular.
Cal#187 is among the scarcer Majorcan gold pieces of the reign.
