Reverse description The large numeral 1 dominates the upper central field, with the denomination ESCUDO inscribed immediately below in capital letters, together forming the face value. The circular legend REPUBLICA · PORTUGUESA · runs along the full periphery, interrupted by small decorative stops. The reverse field is otherwise plain, framed by a beaded inner rim consistent with the obverse border treatment.

Additional information

Portuguese Guinea was in the final stretch of a grinding independence war when this coin was struck — the PAIGC had already declared unilateral independence in September 1973, and Lisbon was losing effective control of most of the territory's interior. The coin was minted in Lisbon for a colonial administration that, within months, would cease to exist following the Carnation Revolution of April 1974.
