Obverse description The colonial coat of arms of Portuguese Guinea occupies the central field, depicting the Portuguese royal arms superimposed upon an armillary sphere — a classic symbol of Portuguese overseas empire. The shield features the traditional quinas (five escutcheons) arrangement, surmounted by a mural crown with five visible towers. The territorial name GUINÉ arcs along the upper legend in large raised letters, while the date 1973 appears in the lower field beneath the arms. Small floral ornaments punctuate the field on either side of the central device, and the coin is bordered by a fine beaded inner rim.

Reverse description The large numeral 1 dominates the upper central field, with the denomination ESCUDO inscribed immediately below in capital letters, together forming the face value. The circular legend REPUBLICA · PORTUGUESA · runs along the full periphery, interrupted by small decorative stops. The reverse field is otherwise plain, framed by a beaded inner rim consistent with the obverse border treatment.
