Portuguese Guinea was in the final stretch of a grinding independence war when this coin was struck — the PAIGC had already declared unilateral independence in September 1973, and Lisbon was losing effective control of most of the territory's interior. The coin was minted in Lisbon for a colonial administration that, within months, would cease to exist following the Carnation Revolution of April 1974.
