Obverse description The arms of the Portuguese Republic occupy the central field, depicting the traditional quinas shield bearing five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants. The national shield is set against a plain field and flanked by the circular legend. The inscription REPVBLICA PORTVGVESA runs along the upper periphery, with the date appearing at the bottom, flanked by decorative stops.

The escudo as a monetary unit survived the fall of the Estado Novo dictatorship in April 1974 entirely intact — the Carnation Revolution changed the government but left the currency unreformed, and coins already in production continued striking without interruption through the transition. Dies dated across the regime change show no meaningful variation, which itself tells you something about how smoothly the Mint absorbed the political upheaval.

Gomes R.26 distinguishes several date variants worth separating in a complete run.
