Banco Nacional Ultramarino's wartime 1 Escudo issues for Portuguese Guinea were produced by Bradbury Wilkinson at a moment when the colony's low-denomination paper currency was effectively doing the work that coins could not reliably supply. Metal shortages during the Second World War disrupted coin production and distribution across Portuguese Africa, pushing small-value notes into everyday transactional use they would not otherwise have seen.
Bradbury Wilkinson's intaglio work on minor colonial issues of this period is consistently fine, often exceeding what the denomination itself demanded.
