| 背面描述 | The Portuguese national arms — a shield charged with five escutcheons in cross arrangement, each bearing five bezants, and a bordure of seven castles — centered within an ornamental armillary sphere or compass-rose designed circle, symbolizing Portugal's Age of Discovery. The numeral 1 appears above the central device, flanked by two olive or laurel branches whose stems meet below the shield, forming a wreath that encloses the design. The denomination legend ESCUDO is inscribed in a recessed band along the lower periphery. |

Portugal's First Republic was in chronic fiscal distress throughout the early 1920s, cycling through governments at a rate that made coherent monetary policy nearly impossible — the republic saw over forty administrations between 1910 and 1926. This 1 Escudo issue in aluminium bronze replaced earlier silver-composition escudos as precious metal coinage disappeared from circulation entirely under wartime and postwar financial strain.
The military coup of May 28, 1926 ended the republic and, with it, this series.
