Obverse description Countermarked segment cut from the outer ring of a Spanish or Spanish Colonial 8 Reales coin, the center of which was removed as an octagon to produce the Guadeloupe KM#3 plug. The remaining ring was subsequently divided into eight arc-shaped sections, each constituting one example of this type. The obverse bears an applied 'RF' (République Française) countermark, stamped by colonial authorities to validate the piece for local circulation. Partial design elements and inscriptions from the original host coin are visible in the field, their extent and legibility varying according to which section of the ring the segment was taken from. Host coins bearing a visible date command a premium in the numismatic market.
