Obverse description Central device depicts the she-wolf of Siena nursing the twins Romulus and Remus, rendered in bold relief in the hammered style characteristic of mid-sixteenth-century Italian coinage. The group is set within the coin's field, flanked by the date 15-56 divided across the lower portion of the design with a small mintmaster's symbol (A within a circle) at center. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central device, reading R P SEN IN MONTE ILICINO, referencing the Sienese Republic and the mint at Montalcino. The entire composition is enclosed within a rope or beaded border typical of Renaissance Italian gold coinage.
