| 正面描述 | Central field dominated by a large stylized 'ECU' legend rendered in bold decorative lettering, incorporating a wave or scroll motif beneath the letters, suggestive of maritime themes. The inscription 'ESPAÑA '92' arcs along the upper portion of the coin within a beaded border. The design is executed in a modern graphic style with strong contrast between the raised lettering and the polished proof field. The fineness '999' appears in small characters within the design. |

Spain's 1992 quincentenary program was among the most prolific commemorative coin campaigns ever mounted by a modern mint — the Madrid Casa de la Moneda issued dozens of denominations across gold, silver, and base metal, flooding collector markets and diluting secondary-market premiums almost immediately. The ECU denomination itself was never legal tender in Spain; its face value was pegged to the European Currency Unit purely as a marketing device for cross-border collector sales ahead of the Maastricht Treaty's ratification.
Columbus's 1492 voyage was financed in part by funds seized from expelled Spanish Jews under the Alhambra Decree, signed the same year — a detail the official commemorative program did not advertise.
