Additional information

The confréries of Bonifacio — the ancient Genoese citadel perched on Corsica's southern cliffs — have maintained fraternal and religious traditions largely unbroken since medieval settlement. This token, issued by their association rather than any monetary authority, circulated locally as a festival or commemorative piece, part of a broader 1990s European enthusiasm for ECU-denominated fantasy issues ahead of monetary union. Hundreds of French municipalities, regions, and private bodies exploited the ECU's liminal legal status — never quite a currency, never quite not one.
