Basel struck its own gold coinage under cantonal authority until the Act of Mediation in 1803 effectively subordinated Swiss cantonal minting to Napoleonic reorganization. The duplone denomination — a double ducat-weight piece — was Basel's primary gold trade coin, circulating well beyond Swiss borders into the Rhine trade networks. Production of this type was sporadic rather than systematic, driven by merchant demand rather than government schedule.
KM#190 is known with minor die variations in the shield rendering, though none carry a premium significant enough for standard catalog purposes.
