Solothurn's duplone issues of the late 1790s were struck in the final years of the Old Swiss Confederacy, just before French Revolutionary forces swept through the region in 1798 and the Helvetic Republic dissolved the cantonal minting privileges that had existed for centuries. The city's output in this window was characteristically small — Solothurn was among the more conservative cantonal mints in terms of volume, and gold issues were produced in limited quantities for commercial and diplomatic use rather than general circulation.

The three-year window closed abruptly when Berne fell to Schauenbourg's army in March 1798.
