| Obverse description | Central oval cartouche with a beaded border containing the Basel crozier (the heraldic symbol of the city), surmounted by a bishop's mitre with ornamental plume. Flanking the cartouche are two symmetrical laurel sprigs. The circular legend RESPVBLICA BASILIENSIS runs around the periphery in raised Latin capitals, separated on each side by the cartouche design. The coin's milled edge is visible as a fine toothed border. |
