Obverse description Central oval shield bearing the arms of Basel — a black crozier on white ground — enclosed within a beaded border and framed by two palm or laurel sprigs that splay outward symmetrically. Above the shield sits the distinctive Basel episcopal hat with its pendant lappets. The circular Latin legend RESPVBLICA BASILEENSIS arcs around the periphery, with the date flanked by mullets positioned at the base of the design within the wreath.
