Louis Napoleon, installed as King of Holland by his brother in 1806, proved an unexpectedly conscientious ruler — so committed to Dutch interests that Napoleon eventually annexed the kingdom outright in 1810, the same year this duit was struck. The colonial coinage continued under his name even as his reign collapsed, making 1810-dated issues a product of a government that had effectively ceased to exist by the time many pieces left the mint.
